There was
opening of an exhibition of 30 young artists on April 15, 1874 in the Boulevard des
Capucines, Paris, who were united with the idea to reproduce in their pictures
short emotional effects our life is rich in. This significant exhibition officially
initiated a new style in the art called impressionism. Specialist of this genre
aspired to not only create topics taken from the everyday life but with photographic
accuracy portray flying impression from an individual though trivial eyewink
that will become a plot for another picture in a while.
While working
they initiated using in the essence new technique of brushwork when they do not
blend paints as they would before but put onto the canvas by the separate
strokes of brushes. The principal point in works of impressionists is not the theme
but the effect of light and shadow onto the very canvas thanks to which the
paintings look airy and dynamic.
By the way works
of painters in impressionism style should be observed at some distance to create
an entire impression about them.
Some time elapsed
and names of painters-pioneers whose works were rejected by guru of realism, won
popularity and fame in the world and were incredibly demanded among amateurs of
painting. Their pictures are sold high picture by picture costing a fortune at
the world known auctions, while this revolutionary genre was recognized
classic.
Pictures by
celebrated impressionists were offered on November 1, 2008 at Christie's
Auction with presentation of artworks by the legendary artists and sculptors of
the late 19th to the first half of 20th century. The facilitators of the auction
collected works of celebrated masters of impressionism as Henri de
Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro and
many others.
The experts
predict that the top logo of the auction may become the picture by Henri de
Toulouse-Lautrec «Burnisher» created by the master sometime between 1886 and
1887. An American collector presented
the picture at the auction. The picture has always been in the number of
private collections and from the date of creation it belonged to five different
owners. The preliminary cost of the picture totaled USD 25 million.
And the popularity
of Henri Matisse is increasing day by
day. The cost of his picture «Daisies» (1919 год) at the same auction totaled
about USD 10 - 15 million. And it was no wonder, for at the Сhristie's auction held
in New York on November 8, 2007, the picture by Henri Matisse «Odalisque Blue
Harmony» was sold for the record-breaking price - USD 33,6 million.
One of the best
pictures of another impressionist, Pier Ogust Renoir «Two Sisters», was sold
for USD 13.5 million at Sotheby's in 2007.
And the record in the cost of Renoir picture was set at Sotheby's in 1990 in New York totaling USD
78.1 million.
Artworks by
Claude Monet are valued no less. Thus, in June 2008 at Christie's the brushwork
by Claude Monet «Water Lilies» was purchased for sensationally short period and
record price. In order to draw this picture the artist spent some years
appealing to the state authority to change the train of the Epte river and
build a dam on it. This way the well-known plant-filled pond of backwater that
was the base for this legendary picture. The preliminary cost of this picture not
presented at auctions for over eighty years made 14 million pounds, however
within two minutes this masterpiece was sold for GBP 36,5 million. Another picture
«Waterloo Bridge» of the same artist was earlier sold at Christie's for USD 35
million.
The same, the
infrequent picture by Edgar Degas «Dancing
Lady» was sold for the price twice as much as expensive than the start price (GBP
13,5 million). The painter who was alleged by ill-wishers to be extremely ill-sighted
(thus they interpreted his manner of drawing) becomes more and more popular,
yet the cost of pictures belonging to him is increasing, as well as works of
other impressionists.
Just the same,
watercolor by Paul Cezanne was sold for incredible USD 25 million. Cezanne is absolutely
one among the painters whose works are highly valued at the market. And lately
the evaluation of his innovative approach and significance to the history of XX
century art is increasing more and more. The preliminary price for the watercolor
by Cezanne «Still life with green melon» made USD 14-18 million. A sheet of paper
with unripe melon and undrawn grapes and rolls in the basket was sold by Juzeppe
Eskenazi, collector, who bought the watercolor in 1989 for USD 4,3 million. Hence,
the profit from the sale was absolute.
Experts of paining
market assure that the mainspring of such high-end auctions includes two
factors - fall of American dollar and huge desire of quite well-to-do Russian
customer to acquire these masterpieces of impressionism. It is likely the
reason why collectors, who are mainly Americans, are forced to present their
treasurers at auctions.
