Paul Gauguin
was a leading Post-Impressionist painter. The majority of Post-Impressionist
painters lived and died in poverty, and Gauguin was not an exception. When he was
living in Tahiti, the place of his best works, Gauguin had to work with the
paint diluted with the paste from the breadfruit tree roots. The painter was then
living in the thatched hat. And nowadays, his paintings of Tahiti period are deemed
as world art treasures, and they are hunted and chased by collectors. His works
are auctioned for fortune all the time.
Once Gauguin's
canvas is auctioned, the auctioneers wait for the high results. It is widely known
that Gauguin is an artwork, it is your prestige, pride, reliable and beneficial
investment of assets.
Paul
Gauguin's «Maternity II» (1899) was auctioned and marked as «estimate under
individual request» which usually stands for increase in price of $50 million
at Sotheby's «Impressionists and Masters of XX Century», ‘04 held in New York. His
painting was not, however, sold for this price, and an anonymous person bought it
only for $39.2 million.
Gauguin's Maternity
I is kept at the State Hermitage (Tahitian Women on the Beach), though,
Maternity II is thought to be the best version. The painting does not show a dog
and a sailor and three splendid women figures seize the attention on the
background of yellow-green sky. A woman tightly holds a baby (depicting
Tahitian lover to Gauguin and his son), and the other two women hold flowers and
fruit in their hands.
Paul
Gauguin's Two Tahitian Women (1902) was sold at Sotheby's in London for $21,4 million.
The painting was written by the artist a year before he died. The painting
shows two topless Tahitian girls sitting opposite each other. It is full of Tahitian
sun and strikes of gorgeous colors. This is a superb masterpiece of the artist that
makes to vividly feel the life. This is not a wonder; the painting was written by
Gauguin when he was sick and dying. As per the preliminary estimate of the painting,
the cost ranged between $17 and $25 million. Two Women was considered as the
most noteworthy work by Gauguin which was sold at the European auctions for the
last decade.
In 2007
Sotheby's exhibited Morning by Paul Gauguin and sold it for $39 million. Prices
for his works have never been low, moreover, they only flew higher prior to any
action event.
As we know,
Gauguin went in for sculptor working as well, apart from painting. Yet, it is expected
that Sotheby's will exhibit his sculptures sometime. A wooden figure recently discovered
is believed to be one of the most impressive and essential sculptures made by Gauguin
(less than 20 sculptures by Gauguin are available that are of the same
significance as Tahiti girl, and all of them are located in museums of France.
The specialists believe the mystery around the Tahitian period of Gauguin can
be disclosed if the wooden sculpture is read appropriately.
Tahitian
Girl is the creation by Paul Gauguin when he first visited Tahiti (9th June
1891 - 14th June 1893). He took this trip to seek ecstasy, peace and
inspiration at the same time. Tahiti appeared to be the island where nothing happened.
Just pure peace, numb and stuffy heat of tropic nights, zombie-like natives.
And this is interesting, the background, so languid, inspired the painter to
create such lovely paintings. It seems as if he managed to see behind the
half-closed and sleepy eyes of Tahitian women something magic so unusual to the
west civilization, as if he felt and touched something odd and weird but
wonderful and perceived their spirit.
It is not at
all absolute, but Tahitian Girl is likely to be the prototype to make works
from ceramics Ovyri, all these hieratic postures, streaming hair resembling androgyne
by the famous ceramic series. Ceramic models are known to be made from wood.
Tahitian
Girl will be the breakthrough in art. The exceptional sculpture by the reputed master,
all this mystic magic embodied, enable us to make assumptions on the potential
price of the sculpture the most incredible, but not infeasible. Bear in mind,
we talk about the most legendary art works of the world.
