Renoir would
have laughed if he was said that in a century his painting would be sold for a fortune.
And modern admirers of his genius feel envious that they could not take part in
the auction in 1875 held in the hotel «Druo» when the paintings of the
legendary painter were sold for 100 franks and even cheaper.
Renoir's «Moulin
de la Gallet»
reproduced by the painter himself, was sold for $78 million USD at Christie's in
1990. That was unprecedented and striking breakthrough for such an incommensurable
short period of time.
At the time
French impressionist and neoimpressionists were not welcomed as vigorously as
now. Moreover, these styles were aggressively rejected and wrangled. And it is outlandish
that it was like that since impressionism is the charming irreflection, subtle hedonism
and tenderness of illusions. And it is weird that it is loved now. Perhaps the point
is in easiness and thoughtlessness so attracted by the public when looking at
the paintings of impressionists. The delicate fineness of paintings offers the
illusory fairy tale.
Nevertheless,
it takes place, and Renoir is immensely demanded. There is a roaring demand for
his works. His artworks are the reliable investment of assets even in the time
of the world financial crisis. Though, everyone agrees that the painting is the
specific item to buy. It is not something consumable. The paintings are usually
assessed and appreciated by experts and in most cases with good assets. Nevertheless,
the wide public prefers investing into Renoir paintings rather than in
manufacture. Renoir appears to be more reliable and his art is not liable to
crisis.
The
paintings by Renoir are easy to perceive and that was the success and
acknowledgment by the later generations as one of the best
impressionists. On
the top of it, Renoir is one of the successful factors of any
avant-garde
painting. It was Renoir works that proved that esthetic assets are
temporary and
relative, while the fashion is not something permanent for ever, but
plastic
and variable concept. Renoir's paintings scoffed at by his contemporary
artists,
are today acknowledged as the example of the beauty, yet this is the
evidence
that beauty as a concept is relative and changeable. Beauty is in eyes
of the
one who looks at something and perceives the beauty, and the absolute
beauty
does not exist. Renoir assured success to every and one single
outrageous
thing. Moreover, the scandalous behavior is the half the battle. Well,
pay attention to the modern art. No, you'd better consider glamour
functions.
The first essential task on
the way to the success is outrageous behavior. And Renoir is the one to
thank
for the fashion to act scandalously.
And this is
wonder that Renoir's contemporaries rushed away from him and only a small group
of esthetes acknowledged and welcomed his paintings and admired his works. The fairy
tale in the painting is the paint of emotions, it's the outburst of feelings
impressed in paints, yet that was the possession of few. And only few people may
appreciate and evaluate the charm of this art.
Currently
all gets upside down. The wide public applauds to Renoir. He is the
same impressionist whose paintings are demanded by all collectors.
His paintings is the
investments more reliable than banks and in perspective they may bring
higher
dividends that nay prestigious bank. While esthetes moved away from
Renoir. He is too affordable; he is too «consumable ».
However,
such attitude of esthetes does not reduce the cost of Renoir's paintings for a
single dollar at European auctions. Renoir's art works is something that is
demanded regardless of the cost of the painting. Renoir's painting «Two Sisters»
(1889) was sold at Sotheby's for $13, 5 million USD. The prices for his works went
up to $20-25 million USD at the world-known auctions, and it was no wonder. And
there was only greed to those who were lucky to acquire the long-awaited
painting.
Instability
of the fund market resulted in that European and American amateurs of the art
initiate investments into such professionals as Renoir. Though it does not mean
that cost for Renoir paintings go down at the world auctions. And there are
always people willing to acquire Renoir's artworks.
