The interior design styles like baroque, rococo and modern look
imperial and luxury, though if you opt for the authentic grandeur which is able
to emphasize the solemnity of negotiations or the private life at the royal
level, have your living room, bedroom or a cabinet made in the Empire style. The
magnificence, the solemn affectedness, the brilliance and halo of the fame of
the Roman Emperors is what makes this style unique and somber.
The history of the interior design changes gradually along
with the preferences and social life of the society. Unwanted elements vanish,
something fresh appears and the new needs and new desires of the powerful
layers of the society are reflected in the interior design styles.
A rare interior style penetrates the society as an ideal
style just by the wish of conquerors. Though, the Empire style is an exception.
The historical style of the art first formed in France in the early XIX century,
during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte during the First Empire, is named after
the French word empire and the Latin word imperium which stands for commanding,
governing or power. Both interpretations correspond to the general concept of
the style as the style of the Empire.
As for the length of evolution, the Empire style is the shortest
style though it left traces on the interior design decoration that we consider
this style was allowed entering the minds and houses of the society at the
coronation event of Napoleon in 1804 and the style saw the end in 1815 during
the collapse of the Empire. Throughout these eleven years, Napoleon Bonaparte got
the glory of the Emperor of France who managed to highlight his majesty on the
base of the style he created considering the art of the Ancient Rome. Under his
supervision, the designers of the Empire created triumphal evidences of his greatness,
military power of France based on motifs of Ancient Rome. The Empire style is the
style of triumph, victory and luxury.
Currently the Empire style is not often used. It is exclusive
style when the special solemnity is required to decorate the theaters, big
halls which intend to make impression with the luxury. This style is also preferred
for private offices of the wealthy. The rooms with low ceiling will look overcrowded
with furniture and accessories even in the Empire style since every piece of furniture
of this style requires the space, especially for this one to create something
like the stage to perform.
Consider, you proceed to design your bedroom in the Empire style
and place a high bed under the canopy and with the stairs to get on the bed
like the bed of Napoleon. Though, such beds will look ridiculous and improper in
modern flats.
The houses with unique layout and wide room will afford
creating the style of Empire in any of the rooms to create the interior of
Napoleon’s bedroom. But the bedroom is not the major piece of furniture, it
occupies the part of the room while the other area is for the table and chairs
since the bedroom serves as the cabinet to solve essential political issues.
Once you decide to add some somberness to your interior,
make sure you get some accessories in the Empire style, imitating the luxury of
the Roman Empire. The Empire style is showy, ceremonial, military triumphal and
the interior proposes lots of military symbols like crossed swords and spears, shields
and helmets, laurel wreaths, images of the Victory Goddess Nika, lions, griffin,
swans and other animals. The décor is rich and pompous, massive tributes are welcomed.
A number of books and maps on the walls are really impressive to create the
intellectual atmosphere in the room. The pieces of furniture also show the elements
of Ancient Rome time with the meaningful smooth flexure of legs and backs of
chairs, the legs styled as legs of lions or griffin, the metrical shape of the
furniture, the expensive fine woods (nut wood and red wood), bronze and gilded plates
instead of the carving and lots of metal trimming. The elements of the Empire style
are epic many-horn lamps and bronze chandelier made from crystal, high
bronze-made candle-holders by the mirror. All the accessories resemble the
triumphal victory nothing more.
The basic colors for the Empire style is gold matched with
green, blue, white, beige and dark red. When decorating the room in the Empire
style, remember the more spacious is the room, the more effective is the style.
