Medically
speaking, the repulsive, unattractive and ugly fold called double chin is a
phenomenon that is caused by a layer of subcutaneous fat around the neck that
droops down and creates a wrinkle, making the owner appear to have a second
chin. However, we, regular folks, are in no way relieved by this scientific
explanation: this fold makes our face look ugly, distorts our face shape, and
makes us look generally fatter and older than we really are. Interestingly, a double
chin is present not only in obese or elderly people, but also in quite slender
young people, predominantly women. Fatty crease in the chin area can be blamed
on the age-related changes in the body which can be addressed, on the excess of
adipose tissue in the body which is easy to get rid of, and finally, on the
anatomical features of the face and jaw, which causes a lot of trouble, anxiety,
and complexes.
There are a
number of choices available to get rid of a double chin. However, exercise for
the chin and jaw area of any kind is designed rather to prevent a double chin,
than to completely remove it. But if your face shape is changing rapidly and
your face is sinking below your waistline due to weight gain, regular exercise
can help to bring your old reflection in the mirror back.
1. Press your chin to your chest tightly.
Without moving the chin, rotate your neck slowly in a clockwise direction, and
then alternate in an anti-clockwise direction.
2. After applying body firming cream, slap
your chin with the back of your hand for 3 minutes.
3. Straining your lower jaw, pronounce
sounds «o», «e», and «u» for 5-7 minutes.
After
exercising, you should apply mineral cold wrap, which will improve blood circulation
and provide a lifting effect. To prepare a mineral cold wrap, dilute a
tablespoon of sea salt without dyes and flavors in a glass of
carbon-dioxide-free mineral water. Wet a towel with this solution, then take it
by the ends and slap yourself on the chin. Perform this exercise carefully, easy
on the neck, without touching the larynx. Make 15 to 20 repetitions.
If you've gone
on a crusade to prevent or remove a double chin, forget about the exercises, when
you have to crane your neck, trying to put your chin forward, as far as
possible. Such «treatment» is not only ineffective, but harmful as it stimulates
stretching of the skin, which soon becomes flabby and sagging, forming a fold,
which could only be eliminated by the aesthetic surgeon.
In the «advanced»
cases of a double chin, caused by the age-related changes and not treatable
with delicate methods, professional help (spa treatments and cosmetic surgery)
may be required.
Mesotherapy
(safe, non-surgical procedure used for body sculpting, cellulite reduction, and
elimination of double chin and eye fat pads) gave birth to mesodissolution, the
newest method of removing excess fat on the chin. Hypodermic medication destroys
fat cells very quickly, stimulating the synthesis of collagen and elastin, responsible
for the formation of smooth and durable «face framework». To completely
eliminate a double chin, up to 10 procedures are recommended.
Other, more
traditional spa treatments used to restore skin smoothness, include chin wraps
and massage, and in particular manual- and vacuum massage, which provides
excellent effect.
Manual
massage, performed using specialized skincare products, can reduce or even
eliminate this unattractive fold on the chin in 8-10 sessions.
Vacuum
massage is more effective and intensive than manual massage. It helps to remove
toxins, stimulate local metabolism, tighten skin, and prevent its sagging after
the procedure. After you've completed a course of vacuum massage treatments,
you need to monitor the condition of your chin area, preventing it from growing
back to the pre-treatment size.
The most radical
method of getting rid of a double chin is cosmetic surgery. However, it is
recommended in case of severe defects, especially in adults, when non-invasive
methods may not be effective. This procedure is called submental lipectomy.
More usually known as a 'neck lift', the standard procedure can be carried out
as an outpatient and involves a small incision under the chin. The extra fat is
then sucked out. Lastly, they will make a vertical incision between the layers
of the neck and jaw muscle, and stitch the edges together, tapering the muscle
layer. It is a moderately painless procedure, and needs only two small bandages
to hide. Bruising is negligible, and usually disappears within about ten days.
More complex operations may involve surgery on muscles or even chin implants.
But if you
really want to lose that chin, start taking better care of yourself. Ensure
your diet is high in fibre and low in fat and calories, containing plenty of
fresh fruit and vegetables. This will help prevent you laying down vast amounts
of fat.
From a
health perspective, there's nothing dangerous about a double chin unless you
are seriously overweight. Even then, the double chin is just a symptom of
obesity, not a problem. But harmless or not, we women still find double chins
unattractive. Getting rid of a double chin is not all that easy, but it's
possible if you try hard enough.
