Women have used
various lip glossing products for centuries. Although, traditionally, it was
the privilege of the courtesans, not the ordinary women, as glossy lustrous
lips have a special appeal, which made it easier for prostitutes to seduce men.
The first commercially available lip gloss was Max Factor's X-Rated, launched
in 1932. Today, there is hardly a cosmetics brand whose makeup range does not
include a lip gloss.
Technically,
lip gloss is a cosmetic product used primarily to give lips a mildly glossy
lustre and sometimes subtle color. It is distributed as a liquid or a soft
solid (not to be confused with lip balm, which generally has medicinal
purposes). It can be completely clear, translucent, or various shades of
opacity, including frosted, glittered, and metallic looks.
Like
lipstick, lip gloss comes in a variety of forms and may be applied in different
ways. It can be contained in a small cylindrical bottle and applied with a rounded
or sloped applicator wand (known as a doefoot applicator), be applied with a
built in lip brush, or a small tube designed for application with the
fingertip. Solid glosses come in boxes and tubes, sometimes blurring the
distinction between lip gloss and lip balm.
Lip gloss
is an essential lip makeup product used by women of all ages, at any time of
the day, at any season of the year. Its smooth texture makes it perfect for a quick
make-up, whereas you may need significant time to properly apply lipstick. In
summer, with lip gloss you young and fresh, as it is perfect for the trendy light,
«naked face» make-up, while in winter lip gloss protects your lips, covering
them with a sort of liquid film and keeping soft and moist. If your lips are
dry, then you only need a lip gloss to fix the problem, and not a lipstick,
which simply would not evenly cover the cracked skin on the lips. Besides, lip
gloss can be used to moisturize lips and cover their defects, such as cracked
and peeled skin.
Young girls
prefer to use lip gloss instead of lipstick, and they're right. The main
difference between the lip gloss and lipstick is in the texture. Traditional
lipsticks are contained in a tube, and must be applied to the lips using a
brush, which requires some skill. When
buying a lipstick, there is always a risk not to find the matching color, as
the lipstick tend to slightly change its color when applied on the lips (the
color usually looks deeper). No such problems are possible with lip gloss, as
frequently the opposite happens: very light liquid texture makes the medium in
the tube look much darker than it looks on your lips, so the makeup with lip
gloss always looks natural.
Lip gloss
generally contains ingredients such as glycerin, aloe vera, vitamin E, vitamin
A, oil ingredients and UV-filters, as the delicate skin on your lips needs particular
UV-protection. If you are unhappy with your thin lips, you can use lip
plumpers. Lip plumper is used to plump lip temporarily that last for a few
hours. It will reduce wrinkled lines on lip and increase blood flow to the
lips. Lip plumpers are usually made of cinnamon, wintergreen, and ginger oils.
They are available in cream, gel and liquid forms. Cream-based limp plumpers
are best to use. Always choose lip plumper with moisturizing ingredients.
Since lip
gloss is used by most modern women, many cosmetic brands produce 2-in-1 lip
makeup products, where one side is lipstick, while the other is lip gloss. It
is very convenient because you can add color and volume to your lips at the
same time. However, it is important to know when to stop. Very often such «color
volume» can make you look unattractive, no matter if your lips are thin or
plump. In both cases, the natural lips shape is lost, and you get either a thin
strip of shine or a blurred spot of color.
Sometimes you
need only a touch of lip gloss in the middle of the lower lip. If the color is
neutral, you may apply the gloss on both lower and upper lips. High-quality
gloss should smoothly cover your lips: it should not form lumps and be sticky. The
average storage term for lip gloss is about 18 months, then it should be
immediately replaced by a new one. You can get beautiful, shining, and smooth
lips with the application of lip gloss. Many companies are advertising natural
lip gloss where the components are organic and cruelty free. While these
products are great for your lips, they are costlier on the other hand.
