The
competition so popular among the reputed designers is not only the common thing
in the fashion world. Yet, it is encouraged since everyone is aware that when
couturiers compete to outdo others, their attempts come to us in the most
amazing collections. Though, the intention to go better than others is tricky.
It is known that Coco Channel never missed to annoy her opponent Elsa
Schiaparelli and once Coco set fire to her
dress. The current fashionists prefer settling their disputes at the court like
Giorgio Armani and D&G. It is not rare when they come to trivial blows.
One of the
longest competitions in the fashion history is known as the war between the
legendary French designers Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld. «Sworn» friends,
Saint Laurent
and Lagerfeld shared the fame, customers, designer ideas and lovers for over decades.
They came to competition in 1954 when Saint
Laurent and Lagerfeld were awarded at the
International Wool Secretariat as young promising designers. Soon after Yves
Saint Laurent was invited to work at the prestigious Christian Dior House who
named him later as his successor while Karl Lagerfeld had to work as a
free-lance designer and cooperate with far less reputed brands. The war between
these two former friends got its peak in the 60s when Saint Laurent succeeded in opening his own
Fashion House and Lagerfeld announced haute couture as the «dying art» to spite
the former. Lagerfeld started to create democratic collections based on
eclectics.
And now we
may believe that the conflict between the two fashion legends was in favor of
Lagerfeld. In 2002 Saint Laurent
left the fashion world since he too deeply got abused of alcohol and drugs. Saint Laurent's House was
made the museum later on. Yet, Karl Lagerfeld continued to manage the Chanel
House successfully and he finally managed to rehabilitate the fashion House in
80s.
The war
between Giorgio Armani and his colleagues from Italy, Domenico Dolce and Stefano
Gabbana rose for such a trivial reason, the plagiarism. This year in January in
two days after Dolce & Gabbana Collection for Men's Wear for the Fashion
Week Men's Wear in Milan,
Armani demonstrated his interpretation of silk trousers that resembled D&G
model of trousers, even the details were similar. Armani announced that Dolce
and Gabbana stole the design of his trousers followed by the scandal in mass
media when designers taking every chance to bitingly comment on each other's
words. As Armani stated, «They replicate now, and who knows, may be they will
learn how to do it then», while Dolce and Gabbana were firm to state that they
could not replicate the model of their colleague since they stopped observing
his collections several years ago.
The
legendary designer Coco Chanel from France was known for her unique
collections of women's wear and her severe temper. Yet, the designer Elsa
Schiaparelli was lucky to feel how Coco appear
to be cruel. This designer was like the pain in the neck for Coco
since she was acknowledged and demanded the same as Chanel. During several year
tow ladies were biting each other with sarcastic comments. Coco Chanel said
that «Elsa is the Italian artist who tries to model and design garments».
However, Chanel once showed her irritation and cruel intentions when she set
fire to Elsa's dress with the candle.
The
conflict between the designer Azzedine Alaia, so beloved by Naomi Campbell and
Michelle Obama, the First Lady of America, and the reputed editor of the
American Vogue, Anna Wintour, lasted over the decade. In spite of the evident
talent of the designer his words are never shown at the pages of Vogue. And the
conflict ended recently, just prior to the Met Gala in early May. When Alaia found
out that his works were not included to exhibit at Model as Muse at
Metropolitan, he accused the exhibition facilitators of showing jaundice and Anna
Wintour - of being dictator and intrusion of her personal opinion to the
Metropolitan employees.
As a
result, he put the Gala function to a boycott when the new exhibition was
opened, as well as his muses, Naomi Campbell and Stephanie Seymour. Later on Alaia
declareв that « Wintour
behaves as a dictator and everyone is afraid to object her. However, I am not
afraid of her or whoever else».
There is no
wonder that conflicts appear between models either, not only between the
designers. And two models, the most famous blondes in the world of models Heidi
Klum and Elle MacPherson, quarreled because of the nickname. In 2006 Heidi
Klum, «the angel» of the trendy brand of Victoria's
Secret lingerie, presented her own collection of underwear for the brand called
«The Body». When the new collection was rotated in commercials, Heidi claimed
that her collection was called «The Body» in honor of herself. However, Elle
MacPherson declared afterwards that this name belongs to her only since she has
been called «The Body» for more than twenty years because of her ideally
shapely figure. Yet, she is called that by friends and glossy magazines like
Harper's Bazaar and Vogue to Sports Illustrated.
One of the
scandals so known in the fashion world appeared to be the conflict between Jack
McCollough, co-founder of the trendy brand Proenza Schouler, and the actor
Kiefer Sutherland, that ended with the trite battle. The reason of the conflict
was a woman but not at all the different opinion on trendy stuff. On
after-party of the Met Gala Jack McCollough accidentally jogged Brooke Shields,
the actress and did not apologize to her. That was a minor bad manner action
from anyone but it made Sutherland mad. That was not the first time when Kiefer
felt miserable because of his too loud energy. Hitting the designer in the
face, Sutherland broke his nose and at the same time he «luckily» got problems
with the law.
