The period of
60s of the previous century were crucial for most spheres of life, that was the
period of social revolutions to affect people considerably. The society was overwhelmed
with new achievements in fashion industry, cosmetology and hair style. The
style shaped to be so trendy in 60s and so innovative is called retro today.
Mini skirts
were the first ardour for women to the widest extent. The historians still
argue on the fact who initiated to shorten the skirt to the most tolerable limit,
whether the English designer Mary
Quant or the French couturier Andre
Courreges.
The point was that mini skirts won the hearts of women and when the widow of
Kennedy, Jacqueline Onassis appeared wearing a short skirt in public, those
skirts became mega trendy for women of all layers of society to appear in
newspapers.
In spite of
strict traditional limitations, reigning in the British monarchy, the skirts of
Elizabeth II, the Queen, got shorter either. The beauty patterns were replaced
so quickly and the new type of fashionable woman was introduced to public: a
teenage girl with thin hands and legs. A mini skirts went ideally with such
shapes. One of the brightest representatives of such a prototype was Twiggy,
the English model, weighing 43 kg being 163 cm in height. Women of 60s tried
their best to look like her and those were the times when women rushed to sit
on various diets to lose weight.
Mini skirts
were followed by nylon pantyhose in 60s, along with bikini, jeans and trousers
for women became the other crucial moment for the time. 60s of the precious century
was the period for the period of change after the epopee of women emancipation
was introduced and promoted. Designers offered to eliminate the gender features
in apparel creating the unisex style.
Massive
beads from plastic, bracelets and macro eyeglasses to cover half the face were
the trendiest accessories of 60s. That was the image of the ordinary woman met
in the street in the 60s. The changes refer to shoes, either, and that period
is known for high boots and platform sole, than ever.
Today we
tend to have accurate but modest makeup for every day while women of 60s
enjoyed having makeup done to impress with self-expression and accurate lines. Eyes
were the crucial and drastic point of the whole image when they were strongly
highlighted with lots of mascara and fake eyelashes. Lip makeup of 60s played
the secondary role and neutral color lipstick or lip gloss was customary for
the plain makeup to boast with freshness and tenderness.
The distinctive
features of 60s were brawny and perfect lines of black and white color. The most
admired colors for apparel were rigorous geometry figures and polka-dots. And
wearing a polka-dot skirt with the blouse with floral pattern was the bad
manners then.
The reputed
stylists of that time introduced clear lines in hairdo as well. Vidal Sassoon, the well-known
and acknowledged stylist in the world, elaborated and launched his own line of
geometry haircuts that differed in even cut and accurate lines. He created the
new Bob haircut so trendy and demanded today.
Also the
60s were known for such synthetic materials as crimplene, nylon, dralon, Dacron,
lycra, terylene, acryan, orlon and polyester. Apart from strange names, people
were excited that the new fabrics were difficult to rumple, lose shape and
appearance. On the top of it, the fabrics were cheap. Then the market introduced
the first imitation leather. People used to apply such new words as polyvinylchloride,
vinyl and plastic. Disposable tableware, clothes and household items became so
comfortable to use. 60s was the time for hippies to struggle against war and
violence advocating love and peace with the motto to Make Love Not War. Sexual revolution
did not fail to occur in the soonest time and primary household needs came to
be substantial than other necessities and the society became the single
consumer crown on the whole in 60s.
