Any woman wants
to be beautiful at any age. As it is well known, demand breeds supply. Nowadays,
there are so many options to preserve our beauty. On the one hand, it's not bad
as there is a choice. On the other hand, it's hard to choose: how can one know
that the clinic provides all necessary help? There's only one way - to find out
more about the clinic, to have a look at the license and to see the results of the
work performed by the clinic's surgeons.
Blepharoplastic
surgery and its types
Eyelid
surgery or belpharoplasty is a technique used to correct drooping upper lids
and puffy bags under the eyes. It helps to eliminate any defect, including lines
and eyelid «bags», to correct the features that make you look older and tired. It
is performed separately or in combination with other cosmetic procedures such
as a facelift or a browlift. Blepharoplasty helps to eliminate skin bags under
eyes, dark circles and upper lid sagging. Minor defects like wrinkles in the eye
area and crow's feet are not the case for blepharoplasty and demand other
intervention.
For reference,
there are cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgeries of upper and lower lids,
sometimes they are performed simultaneously.
Indications
for blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty
can be both functional and cosmetic surgical procedure intended to reshape the
upper or lower eyelid by the removal or repositioning of excess tissue as well
as by reinforcement of surrounding muscles. When an advanced amount of upper
eyelid skin is present, the skin may hang over the eyelashes and cause a loss
of peripheral vision. Patients with a less severe amount of excess skin may
have a similar procedure performed for cosmetic reasons. Hereditary factor is
also of great importance as well as anti-age skin care. Lower eyelid
blepharoplasty is almost always performed for cosmetic reasons such as to
improve puffy lower eyelid «bags» and reduce the wrinkling of skin, which are
the additional indications for performing blepharoplasty.
How eyelid surgery
is performed
The
procedure normally takes place in a surgeon's office facility but can also be
done in a hospital. It is usually performed under general anesthetic. The
doctor makes incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids: in the creases
of your upper eyelids, and just below the lashes in the lower lids. This
minimizes any visible scarring after the surgery. Working through these
incisions, the surgeon then separates the skin from the underlying fatty tissue
and muscle, removes excess fat, and trims any sagging skin and muscle that is
present. The incisions are then sealed with very small sutures. Over time the scars
become pale and almost invisible.
After the
procedure
The patient
can usually leave the hospital on the day of surgery. The eyes and eyelids will
be covered with ointment and a bandage for 4-6 hours. They may feel tight and
sore as the anesthesia wears off, though the discomfort is easily controlled
with pain medication. The head should be kept elevated as much as possible for
several days and cold packs applied to reduce swelling and bruising. Eyedrops
may be recommended to reduce burning or itching of the eyes. Normal vision
should be restored after 2 to 3 days. Edema may last for two weeks; any
bruising that is present should completely disappear anywhere from two weeks to
a month. The stitches must be removed 3 to 5 days after the surgery: shinplasters
are used to protect the scars. Most of the patients return to normal activities
in 7-10 days after the surgery. During the recovery process, you may find that
your eyes are more sensitive to sunlight and wind so be sure to wear sunglasses.
Now you may use hypoallergenic makeup.
The results
of blepharoplasy
After the
eyelid surgery, the results last for many years and in some cases, are
permanent. In most cases, the scars are absolutely invisible you'll find that blepharoplasty
makes you look more alert and youthful.
Complications
of eyelid surgery
One of the
complications is the slight change of eye shape: patients may be unsatisfied by
that fact. Eyes seem larger, outer corners somewhat droop, making the look a
little sad. Sometimes excessive lower eyelid drooping occurs (extropian). You
may experience some double vision or blurred vision and some swelling at the
corner of the eyes. However, these are temporary symptoms that should be gone
within a couple of days. Other more rare complications include difficulty
closing your eyes after the surgery, and pulling down of the lower eyelid. If any
of these are present for 6 months, a subsequent surgery may be required.
Other eyelid
surgery complications are minimal, cases of infection and post-operative bleeding
are very rare. Bruises and edema around the eyes several days after the surgery
make the patients nervous, but soon completely disappear. Cornea lesions are theoretically
possible but in practice are unlikely to occur.
How to
choose a plastic surgery clinic
However, it's
hard to define for a person that is not a specialist in medicine, if this or
that clinic worth trust. The state has developed laws to protect the patients; but
you have to check the license. According to the health care laws, every clinic providing
medical care has to undergo medical licensing procedure. The document includes
all the information about the amount of surgery permitted to that clinic.
Before issuing the license the specialists estimate the resources, equipment
and qualification of surgeons. The copy of the license should be displayed to
the fore. Read it carefully!
It's strongly
advisable to see for yourself the results of plastic surgeon's work before you trust
your face to one of them.
Remember: operational
equipment, instruments, suture materials, implants and qualification of plastic
surgeons are absolutely identical in most of the developed countries. So, it's not
reasonable to go abroad and pay tons of money for plastic surgery. Just think and
make the right choice among the local clinics.
