Probably, there
is no point emphasizing the importance of breast shape in the full picture of every
girl's appeal and desirability. Women as well as men lay emphasis on size and shape
of female breasts. And women particularly are sometimes too critical of their assets;
they tend to find flaws even where the most demanding expert in female beauty admires
perfection.
The result of
such critical scrutiny is sometimes a decision to resort to surgical correction
of the appearance of these tender areas of woman's body, to the procedure
called mammoplasty (breast surgery). However, there are cases that require surgery,
for example, after lumpectomy (removal of a malicious lump) or when breasts are
visibly asymmetric. Sometimes surgery is recommended when breasts have lost aesthetic
appeal, when they sag and look unattractive, which may cause inferiority
complex in women.
What types of
breast surgery are most popular today? Sure enough, breast augmentation surgery
is heading the list. Many girls try to look sexier and resort to surgery of
both breasts. There are cases when right and left breasts are different in
size, so only one of them needs to be augmented. Post-lactation involution of mammary
glands is a significant diminution resulting from breast-feeding which demands implantation
surgery. Often it is provided by special silicone implants. The surgeon together
with the patient selects size, shape and type of the implant. This choice is highly
individual and depends on many factors. The implants are located between the breast
tissues. When properly chosen, they withstand mechanical stresses, cause no immunologic
reactions of rejection, preserve preselected shape of breast and bring no pain
or discomfort. Some modern aesthetic surgery centers offer implants that last
for a long period of time, sometimes for fifteen years. New methods and high quality
materials ensure good lasting results. As a rule, implants do not interfere
with X-ray examination or ultrasonic scanning of breasts. Implantation surgery usually
lasts for 2 hours or less, it is performed under general anesthesia.
Most women worry
about possible complications after implantation surgery. Among other things, there
is a belief that implants cause malignant neoplasms or breast cancer. Numerous researches
and currently available statistics of the relevant European committee indicate that
silicone breast implants do not cause cancer or other malignant diseases, and
moreover, do not spur allergy or intoxication. Besides, implantation does not affect
breast sensitivity and allows child bearing and breast-feeding without
limitations. No negative effect on children was observed.
Sometimes a
patient needs an operation on breast reduction. In this case the surgery is needed
not only for aesthetic reasons but to prevent such serious complications as spinal
deformity, vertebral nerve entrapment, permanent severe pains in cervical and
thoracic spine, chest organs pathology. The surgery consists of partial removal
of the mammary gland and reposition of the nipple and areola into higher place.
Breast lift
is another commonly used type of breast surgery. This surgery achieves the
following goals: setting of normal breast height, placement of nipples and
areolas on the top of mammary gland (areola size decrease and improvement of
its contour and size is also possible); preservation of normal consistence. In most
cases, implantation is not necessary. Sometimes it is combined with breast reduction
surgery because big mammary glands can cause breast sagging under its own weight.
The list of
corrective breast surgeries includes correction of nipple and areola (pigmented
circle around nipple) size and shape.
Despite seeming
simplicity of the surgery, patients after mammoplasty must undergo medical follow-ups
at regular intervals as there is a minor risk of inflammation in the wound and scarring.
Besides, some drugs during rehabilitation period may be taken only under
medical supervision.
Before the
surgery, the patient must undergo full medical examination as some mental or
somatic disorders (diabetes, heart disease and tuberculosis) may contraindicate
the surgery.
