Today, having a look at the covers of
glossy magazines or watching TV, we see dazzling pearly smiles of TV-show stars
and feel unhappy with what we see in the mirror. We see people living in the
Hollywood Hills area or in the
most prestigious districts of the nearest city and dream of having the
same uniform chocolate tanning and the same snow-white teeth.
And it's obvious that the advertisements of
chewing gum, toothpaste and tooth brushes (which are able to get to some
hard-to-reach places) just aggravate such an evident discordance.
You know it yourself. Despite all our
efforts, super tooth-brushes and super toothpastes, our own smile has only
slight resemblance to what we see on the TV screen. Some people believe what
the advertisement says and eats only sugarless chewing gum, others pay a lot of
money for the regular procedures of teeth bleaching, and some even try to make
the color of the enamel better with the help of baking soda.
In any case - even if we succeed in making
your teeth white, rather soon the daily portions of caffeine or nicotine,
sweets (which are harmful to teeth) or rusks (which are actually destroying the
enamel) do what they are expected to do. We can give up our favorite habit to
have a cup of coffee and a cigarette in the morning, but are we really able to
make sure that our mouth cavity is free even from the tiniest pieces of
foodstuffs after we had our lunch?
It's a hard thing to do. In any case the
speedy rhythm of a modern city is of little help for it. So what should we do,
if we dream of making our teeth white, but cannot change our way of life by
means of some drastic measures.
The first thing to be done is to change our
attitude to a well-know stereotype of a snow-white smile. The ones, who feel
ashamed because their teeth have a slight yellowish shade, which is not caused
by drinking too much coffee or smoking too much tobacco, should have quite the
opposite feeling - they should be glad about it. Despite the widespread belief
(which is actually wrong) that a healthy person has to have white teeth, the
doctors keep to the opinion that the yellowish enamel is stronger and is less
prone to caries. Yes, white teeth look more attractive, and yes - people with
yellowish teeth will never be photographed for the advertisement of chewing gum
or a toothpaste. But just think - do you really need this? Isn't it better to
live, having yellowish teeth, and not to worry about microcracks, scratches and
precocious caries?
Alas, lots of us feel the necessity to
correspond with the beautiful pictures from the posters. This is the reason why
we want to make our teeth at least a little whiter. And we are ready to use any
possible means. So, if you have reached the decision to bleach your teeth,
please, do follow my advice: start with the less effective, but less harmful
ways. Perhaps you will be pleased with the result, and your teeth won't have
the damaged enamel.
One of the less powerful ways of teeth
bleaching is the mechanical way: dental deposits and dental calculus are
removed from the teeth. As a rule, this procedure is carried out in the
dentist's office: the doctor just directs the jet of sand and sol solution to
the patient's teeth, or uses the supersonic device, which removes dental
deposits from the teeth.
This method has a really large advantage -
it is not harmful for the enamel, that's why this procedure can be carried out
twice a year. Teeth will get healthier, cleaner and one or two shades lighter
than before.
But if you don't want to visit the dentist,
you can try to bleach your teeth at home.
At first your dentist will prepare the
kappas fitting your teeth and will provide you with the bleaching gel. Coming
home you put this gel into the kappas and put the kappas on your teeth before
you go to bed. Your dentist will keep watching your teeth during the course of
bleaching and will give you necessary consultations. When some time passes, the
color of the enamel will get lighter than before, but don't think it is going
to be beneficial for your teeth. The thing is that this gel contains hydrogen
peroxide, which destroys the enamel, making your teeth more sensitive to warmth
and cold. Moreover the color of the teeth can be unnaturally white.
There is one more way to bleach your teeth,
although it is slow and not so noticeable. This is so called «Colgate-bleaching».
You take special gel and put it on your teeth by means of a brush. When this
gel stiffens, the color of your enamel gets whiter. The effect is kept until
gel is washed away by your saliva.
The advantage of this method is that its
result is durable and cautious in relation to teeth. The disadvantage is that
teeth are not so white, as when they are bleached by a dentist, and the
procedures last half a month.
If you want to bleach you teeth by yourself
and to avoid spending a lot of money and time, choose special bleaching pastes,
wide choice of which can be found in any chemist's.
Their negative influence on the enamel is
very little, they help you to remove dental deposits, and after using such
pastes you won't have teeth, which are excessively white. But do remember - you
can use these pastes not longer than a month, and after that you have to let
your enamel recreate for some months.
At present the safest way is so called in-office
bleaching. It is carried out under the supervision of a dentist in a special
stomatological clinic. The dentist prepares your teeth to bleaching and
controls the process of bleaching as well. If some problems arise, your dentist
takes a decision about the measures to be taken: should the color be made more
uniform, should the cracks in the enamel be mended or should some curative
toothpaste be recommended. After such bleaching your teeth will get stronger
and healthier.
And finally - the list of easy empirical
ways to bleach you teeth (these method will spare your teeth, but won't make
them really white). For this procedure you will need lemon-peel, baking soda or
the sand from the river bank. Any of these ingredients can be wrapped into a
piece of cheesecloth, and then you can start rubbing your teeth with it. But be
careful with soda, it can damage your enamel.
So, aspire to the Hollywood smile, but be smart
enough to remember that you shouldn't sacrifice your health to a beautiful
picture.
