Folate, also called folic acid, is a Vitamin В9, that stands
for pteroylheptaglutamyne acid. It helps the body produce healthy new cells.
The efficiency of the folic acid is not news for most of us but only during the
last decades the medicine highlights the good of folic acid during pregnancy.
Though, everyone needs folic acid.Furthermore, folic acid is beneficial for
people suffering from asiderotic anemia. The folic acid is not accumulated in
human body and therefore we should intake enough folic acid daily to replenish
the required amount. If you don't get enough folic acid from foodstuff, you can
also take it as dietary supplements.
According to statistical data every other woman suffers from
the deficit of folic acid which is caused by deficiency of the vitamin in the
diet or disturbance in absorption of folic acid by the bowels. The folic acid
deficiency is often seen with women who regularly take hormonal treatment or
abuse alcohol.
Folic acid intake is substantial during pregnancy,
especially during the first three months of pregnancy since this vitamin
participates in the process of blood formation and nervous system development
of the fetus and this is required for the normal development of all tissues and
internal organs, though the third trimester also requires folate.
The folic acid in the organism of an adult takes an active
part in process of cell renewal and along with Vitamin B12 it is involved in
blood formation, change of serotonin and adrenaline; it ensures the stable
emotions and also the folic acid is responsible for the appetite stimulation
during meal since it favors production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
The sufficient amount of folic acid depends upon the regular
absorption of it and it is disturbed with gastrointestinal tract disease,
disbacteriosis of the intestinal canal as well as with the lack of raw
foodstuff in the diet. It is well proved that the foodstuff containing folic
acid is cooked, it decreases for 90%. And therefore the dieting should be
balanced and contain sufficient fruits, vegetables and greenery for daily
intake. Folic acid in plenty amount is found in green leaves of plants. The
word «folic» comes from the Latin word «folium» which stands for the leave.
The abundant amount of folic acid is there in leaves of
onion, spinach, salad, parsley or asparagus. It is highly concentrated in
yeasts, carrots, whole wheat or rye flour, in liver, cheese, egg yolk, beans,
apricots, melons and pumpkins. We see the deficiency of folic acid if it rarely
comes into the organism which brings to formation of megaloblastic anemia. The
said pathological state is followed by the disturbance in formation of
megaloplasts – erythrocytes in the marrow which in turns leads to decrease in
hemoglobin. At the early stages of folic acid deficiency a person suffers from
the loss of appetite, fatigue and irritability.
Furthermore, the anemia is followed by diarrhea, vomiting, stomach
ache, loss of hair, poor appearance of nails and skin, depression and problems
with memory.
Folic acid is proved to play substantial role during
pregnancy in process of various surveys when the link between the insufficient
intake of folic acid into the organism of the pregnant woman and formation of
deficiencies of medullary tube, malformation of cardiovascular system, increase in risk of miscarriage or arrested
development of a child. Folic acid deficiency may appear during the postnatal
stage and expressed in depressions, general weakness, apathy of the pregnant
woman to the surrounding events, and provoke decrease in lactation.
The lack of folic acid in the organism of a pregnant woman
results in less amount of this vitamin in the breast milk also which causes
deficiency of folic acid with the baby as well. As a consequence, the infant may
lack ferrous elements, the anemia may develop, the immune system of the
organism decreases and impairment of the intestine functions is observed.
With the purpose to avoid the deficit of folic acid with
pregnant women and women in lactation the folic acid is prescribed for intake
in the amount of 800 microgram per day and the adults may have 300 to 400 microgram
per day.
However, one should be careful and avoid over dosage of
folic acid since it is of no good and may cause serious consequences for he
organism, in particular it may bring to higher nervous irritability,
gastrointestinal disorders and functional kidney impairments.
