Nobody
knows where the imperial jade has its name from. Some researchers believe that the
name origins from the word «yaspis» that is spotty, while others express their
opinions that the word «yatro» matters herein, meaning frog in Greek language.
Actually the mineral is the stone with the spots like those of the specky frog.
The jade is the many-color mineral. Red and green jade are most popular, then
go orange, yellow, black, grey-to-violet, blue-green and other shade stones.
Yet,
these stones are mostly appreciated for wonderful patterns that are seen on the
polished stone being the paintings made by nature.
Imperial
jade is the mineral with the ancient history, yet it was mostly used for weapons and
tools in the paleolite epoch. In the late centuries the jade became the ornamental
mineral to make jewels and decorations.
As
many minerals and stones, the imperial jade was believed to possess some magic
features to adore by many nations. Thus, in Japan the carrier assigned to deliver
the news was holding the branch of adzus tree with the jade attached to it that
symbolized the human life. In ancient Greece the jade was used as the talisman
from evil eye for young mothers and infants. In the East the jade symbolized
the beauty, grace and wealth. In the ancient Egypt amulets were made from jade to
protect from evils.
The
Old Testament says about the imperial jade, the twelfth stone that
decorated
the efud, the breastplate of the archpriest of Judaea. And the green
jade with red
insertions (in other words, heliotrope) is believed to absorb Christ's
blood
when he was bleeding at the crucifix. Thus, heliotrope is considered as
the strong
mineral to protect or heal ill people, though with the important
feature. To do this, the mineral should be made holy in the church.
Lithotherapeutists
used the imperial jade to heal various diseases for all the times. Avizenna wrote
that this mineral «... is very wholesome for the stomach. Paten mentioned that the
necklace from jade, long enough to the stomach, is wholesome for the esophagus
and stomach», - thus, in the opinion of Avizenna, the belt from jade and very
long necklace are able to heal various gastrointestinal problems.
The
red jade was also considered to stop bleeding. The author of painters of XYI centuries
Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) wrote, «When Luca Signorelli heard that I was
suffering from nasal bleeding in the particular period of life that were
exhausting, he put the amulet of the bloody red jade round my neck».
The
ancient Rome natives used to carve the initials of the person to heal on jade.
And when the gem with the lion is carved on the jade, this was believed to heal
from the fever. For example, Heracles strangling the lion on the gem of bloody red
color was accepted as the reliable amulet from the stomach colic, and three
letters C were craved on the reverse side of the mineral.
Marcellas
Empiricus, the doctor, who lived in IV century recommended in his treaty «On
medications» to carve ZZZ sign on the mineral and put it round the neck of the
patient suffering from aches in the abdomen, and they would be healed».
Imperial
jade was also used to heal various women diseases, and Avizenna advised that
jade be worn on the stomach. The jade attached to the thigh was believed to relieve
pain during delivery. Hippocrates healed fever and epilepsy with the imperial
jade.
The
imperial jade was also thought to protect from evil fate, to bring good luck, to
get rid of severe and black thoughts and depression, to make merry, to multiply
the mind and power, to heal the memory, and so forth. The talismans from the jade
were liked by warriors and travelers since they are thought to prevent from
lightning stroke and poisonous snakes, it makes the jade bearer irresistible.
And the jade talisman helps to win in battles and disputes, indeed.
On
the top of it, the green jade is able to guard from draughts and bring rain.
Also the mineral is good to give indefatigability and to restrain wild animals.
Currently
the followers of «mineral magic» recommend the jade as the stone to improve
relations with the supervisors, whether for the help in restraining animals or invincibility
in disputes, not known for sure.
