The book by
Wilkie Collins «The Moonstone» telling about the diamond accidentally appeared to
publicize moonstones, magnificent minerals with the charming «moon light». Collins
in his book depicts the precious stones not as diamonds but the moon stones
exactly as if it came from ancient Indian legends. The mineral is the yellowish
stone glittering from inside, with silky and smooth surface that shines in the
new moon periods and has the ability to absorb moon beams.
We do not know
for sure about the absorbance of moon light by these minerals, though all the
told above complies with the real facts.
The moon stone
is the kinds of feldspar. It is distinctive among the other stones with the
specific optic effect, so called schillerization (from Deutsch «Schiller» that
stands for play of colors). The most valuable among the moon stones appear
Adulars. The stones are called so due to the mountains Adula in the Swiss Alps
where the stones with the same play of tints were first found. Adularization is
the gleam when the stone is rotated, and the light is reflected from the inner
side of the mineral. The reflexion of the moon stone is blue-and-silver like
the moonlight. Yet, to keep the charming gleam, adulars are usually processed
as cabochons. There are moon stones sometimes mined in India that possess
asterism as the four-rayed star or having the effect of the «cat eye».
In Europe the stone was called the fish eye, icy spar, aglaurit,
selenite, pearl spar. The Indians gave to the moon stone the most romantic name
around 1000 years ago, they called it «djandarakand» which is the moon shining.
The point is that the Indians believed that the moon stone is created from the hardened
moon rays, thus having the magic silky gleam. In addition, the people in old
times believed that the moon stone was able to change the shade with the moon
phases, and it was believed to appear the most magnificent during the new moon
period.
The moon stone
is mostly deemed to be the gem for women, yet, it ensures the protection by the
moon Goddess Selena and the stone was called Berzelius Selenite to honor her.
The moon stone is supposed to attract love, yet, a lonely woman should wear jewelry
with the moon stone to have a partner. Also the moon stone gives more charisma
and elegance to its owner, chic and the ability to behave well in various
events.
During the
ancient times the moon stone was widely practiced in lithotherapy procedures.
It was largely worn as a jewel to reduce emotional bursts and as a debilitant. As
to the Hindu people, the stone absorbs the cooling vigor of the moon, and thus,
it may provoke dreaminess and tenderness, bring down aggression, and calm down
the explosive temper. The Tibetan medicine used these features of the moon
stone for longer time to treat epilepsy and mental disorders. Kidney and gall
bladder functions impairment, sand in the urinary tracts are also the
indications to wear moon stone jewels. People who suffered from edema and dropsy
were believed to relieve when having the moon stone on them. In most cases, the
moon stone was used to treat gynecological diseases and other women disorders.
And yet, women are advised that they wear moon stone accessories during their
periods. And eyes, our eyes are so fragile and sensitive, that they are subject
to many trauma and injuries and problems throughout all our life. And the moon
stone is good to treat eye diseases.
The moon
stone was greatly appreciated in India, and ancient people found the
gem to emit the healthy moisture to treat melancholy and fever, when put in
dark place.
Besides, the
moon stone is supposed to have magic features. Yes, it can appear as the
Teacher to answer the questions. To have answers to your questions, the moon
stone should be exposed to moon light and all concentrate on your question, and
then the stone will reply. The moon stone is like the talisman to protect the
owner from various harmful substances. Should the moon stone owner is born in
the full moon period, the magic features of the jewel will be shown in full. The
stone also protects the couples who are in love and brings peace and faith. All
the more, the stone reacts immediately when the feelings get cool, and the
stone changes in color and gets dull. The British people assure that the stone
gives to the owner the elocutionary gift and, moreover, the person gets a real
accomplished spieler. It is interesting, but the moon stone should have been
put under the tongue to be a good speaker, but not worn as an accessory.
The real
jewelry moon stone is rare today, unfortunately. The best moon stones were mined
near Sri-Lanka though some of them were developed (Dunbara) and the others were
closed from processing with the aim to reserve the balance in nature.
Therefore, all the stones that are marketed as the real Sri-Lanka stones appear
to be the imported stones from Africa, while
they are only cut by jewelers in Sri-Lanka. The same, deposits Madras
in India and Mogok in Burma were
developed. Yet, the transparent stones are rare in nature, while the price for
them go up.
There are
so many synthetic moon stones of translucent to half-translucent, bluish and
milky. They even have structure without distinctive gleams when rotated. They
are very cheap, though. And sometimes only experts may assess and estimate the
replica, when they are professionally made. As a rule, synthetic moon stones do
not possess the magic features of real natural minerals. They are advantageous
in price only, and they resemble the real moon stones.
