Long
before the legendary fragrance CK One appeared in 1994, as one of the first and
demanded unisex scents in the world, the name of Calvin Klein triumphed in the
world of perfume. In 1985 the American designer launched its fragrance Obsession
that became the first perfume hit of Calvin Klein brand and that immediately
advanced the two preceding fragrances in sales volume, that is Calvin Klein for
women and Calvin for men that discontinued long time ago.
As
lots of perfumery creations of 80s, Calvin Klein Obsession did not distinguish
with the extra modesty and to Calvin Klein, the name Obsession is very loud and
impressive as in the movie. Creating the scent, the designer recalled all his previous
inventions and the way he was obsessed with them. And Klein affirms the «everybody
was obsessed in 80s».
The
fragrance proved its loud and provocative name Calvin Klein Obsession to the
full extent; for thanks to the grandiose advertisement the fragrance was sold
in many stores and boutiques before it was actually arrive to the places.
As
most creations of Calvin Klein who was called the outrageous master this
fragrance was rather scandal than triumph. The image of the Obsession was selected
Kate Moss, the model not so popular that time, who featured fully naked in the
advertisement of Obsession. Klein was thrown claims one after another. One
declared that the advertisement of Obsession advocate the pedophilia, the
others accused the American designer of support of anorexia.
Nevertheless,
Kate Moss who was selected for this advertisement on the contrary to the
legendary super models of 80s turned to be the real happy talisman for
Obsession in spite of all scandals. During the decade, since 1985 and in the
90s Calvin Klein Obsession kept to be the permanent bestseller of the American
fashionable brand.
when
presenting Obsession to the public, Calvin Klein stated that he did not want to
go along the paved way using the classic formula and the designer tried to
create the other fragrance, that appeared to be sexual, explicit and
provocative, the same as Calvin Klein imagined a woman. Ann Gottlieb, the perfumer,
who also contributed to the fragrance, depicted the scent as «sensitive with
slight hint on vulgarism».
No
less provocative than the name was the fragrance, the perfumery composition of
which was created by Jean Guichard, «the author» of such scents as Cacharel LouLou,
Givenchy L'Interdit, Nina Ricci L'Eau du Temps, and Trussardi Donna Trussardi. Warm,
amber and Orient flowery Calvin Klein Obsession seduced with mild notes of
spices and wood. The perfumery composition of the fragrance included the notes
of tangerine, bergamot, greenery, jasmine, rose, orange flowers, coriander, amber,
oak moss and wormwood. Calvin Klein Obsession pronounced so loud, so naughty
and sexual that it took the shine out of the icon Giorgio by 1987 that was
thought to be the national scent of America, no less. During the 80s Calvin Klein
Obsession was found in every point of the world, the same as the French Christian
Dior Poison, launched that time, and the Obsession became the scent of the
epoch of the 80s.
As
it is dictated by the fashion and typical to all icon fragrances, Calvin Klein Obsession
got its flankers. Being alone for over ten years, Calvin Klein Obsession yielded
to its follower the previous year, the fragrance Secret Obsession. Continuing and
developing the concept of the unique scent, Secret Obsession come as more
sensitive since the new age detected absence of any borders for sexuality and
the permissiveness, that allowed Secret Obsession reflecting the spirit of the
new age. Secret Obsession is deep, luxury, more sensitive and intensive than
the unique Obsession. The image of Secret Obsession was the Hollywood actress
Eva Mendes, the real sexual woman to confront Kate Moss, whose androgynous charm
of the teenager attracted designers in the 80s. The advertisement campaign
followed after the Secret Obsession caused the great scandal in the society,
and Mendez was refused in several countries of the world when she was featured
naked.
