The
word manicure derives from the Latin «manus» which means a hand and «cure» which
is the word for care. Since the ancient times people were very careful when it
came to their nails and they took care of the beauty of their hands and nails.
It is very well known that women of the ancient Egypt used alkanna and other
natural ingredients to take care of their nails and fingers. However taking
care of the nails was not a ladies' prerogative at those times. Men also used
different types of caretaking ingredients to protect and make their nails more
beautiful.
Long
and brightly decorated nails were a sign of the royal origin and the high
social status the person had. Plebeians were only allowed to have short nails
and if they were to color them it could only be the light toned paint. At the
archeological excavations of the Pharaoh Nyuserre Ini's tomb a list of the
pharaoh's escort was found. There was indication of the slaves who were
literally protecting and mastering the Pharaoh's nails in the list, which means
that there were actually the manicure masters who served the Pharaoh.
Manicure
as we know it know has been firstly developed in France. Some say that after
Louis' agnail got safely removed by Louis' own doctor, doctor has got the idea
of creating a whole new set of instruments for taking care of nails and
fingers. That doctor's nephew was a very ambitious lady and it is her who is
responsible for manicure getting more and more popular. It is actually at that
time that the orange stick first was created with which manicuring masters even
today remove the pellicles.
With
the 20th out there women became more and more careful when it came to their
fingers, hands, palms and nails and taking care of those. Seeing the trend the
producers started introducing more and more instruments to help taking care,
painting of the nails and such, increasing its brightness and making them
shinier. The first ever caretaking tools were of the paste consistence. The
paste had to be rubbed in the nails and then had to be polished until the nails
became shiny. First ever nail varnish appeared in 1917 in the USA and it was of
the pink colors. In the 1920-s fashion bugs all over the world could get nail
polishes of any color they wished. What many people find interesting today is
that at those times nail polish could only be bought at the pharmacy stores.
The polishes those days were of the very bad quality, did not last for long and
usually it went off on the next day. The most popular and wanted color of the
nail varnishes at that stage was the red. It was believed that lip stick and
nail varnish should have been of the same colors. For years to come this idea
was not a simple fashion trend it was something that every lady knew and
something every lady followed. Fortunately today a lady can choose whichever
lip stick and nail polisher she wants with only her own taste and mood that
matters. In 1930-s first ever strength gloss appeared making it possible for
the nail polish to last even longer.
In
1960-s companies that were producing the materials and ingredients for dentist
clinics started to get new clients that were the adventurous owners of the
manicure cabinets. According to one of the legends a dentist from the USA
applied acryl to his wife's nails to stop her from biting those. This is how
the idea of the false nails came around. For ages women of all types wanted to
obtain those long beautiful nails of the correct forms and here it was. The demand
for the nails was so enormously big that a brand new laboratory was built to
help inventing the new materials for the nails or improving the old materials
used for producing tooth prostheses. With every year there are new technologies
being introduced to create false nails.
In
1975 in Los Angeles, USA a man called Jeff Pink invented the French manicure.
It had little to none to do with France but the name was there to add a bit of
charm to the invention, according to Jeff. From his words he invented the
French manicure for the Hollywood producers who asked him to invent something
new in the industry. At those times Hollywood actresses had to repaint their
nails every time they had to wear a different costume and it created a lot of
hassle and there's probably no need in explaining why it took a huge amount of
time off the set. This is where the smart American came in and introduced his
new invention that was a tenderly pinkish color of the painting with the white
strip on top of the nail that suited every costume and clothes out there as
well as every woman's image. Women all over the world have appreciated the new
invention of the French manicure and even today it remains the most demanded
service at the manicure cabinets all over the world.
