Hippy style keeps the considerable niche in the fashion
segment lately and it is apparently one of the amazing tendencies ever happened
in fashion culture. Hippy is a counter-culture that appeared in the 60s though
currently there is no need to use the detailed concept of hippy style if you
want to adopt some of their elements. The point is that hippy style is
something to adopt the element carefully not to make real hippies shudder with
the look. And today there far many challenges for that.
Hippy is the culture that covered the late 60s and early
70s. Hippy is radical that counters the culture of the other world. They are
pacifiers who always performed against military and war actions. They were the
first to advocate merging with nature in clothes which should be also made from
natural fabric. Yet, the apogee of their movement was nudism as the alliance
with genuine nature. The hippies call themselves «flower children», and this back
to nature bent spilled over into their image using loose clothes, floral
patterned fabric and lots of accessories. Hippies wore peasant blouses, granny
dresses and carried hemp bags. No trouble to be discussed.
Origin of fashion in culture
No Rules was the main rule for hippies. The hippy followers
never adhered to any particular style. the image of a hippy is the fantastic
blend of vivid colors and accessories, though the look is too natural, without
breaking their peace philosophy and harmony with nature.
The words handmade and natural were sacred words for hippies
most of them crafted macramé, beading and other homespun things that are never
done by modern teens.
Hippies borrowed the fashion trends with various cultures
though mainly from the middle East and countries of Central America blending
the styles into the incredible eclectics which is the favorable ground to
borrow today.
The traditional hippy image included a flower or the
Pocahontas headband as a compulsory accessory,
with long hair which is though clean. Hippy ladies would wear a mini or
even micro skirt provided they had decent legs, jeans-bell bottom with patches,
long skirts, various tunics and blouses. A chain belt was cool to match the
image. As for men, they also wore jeans, the grungier the better. Leather vests
were another symbol for hippies as the ankle chain. All the clothes should have
the fringe. Anything could be fringed. And the obligatory was peace symbol.
Every last one of them had at least one peace symbol.
As for the accessories, hippies wore them for self-expression
purposes. They liked wooden amulets and talismans, the others favored for beads
and juicy floral kerchiefs.
The shoes that hippies liked included sandals and flats or
zipper boots. Hippy style is often confused with country style for the tendency
to use natural fabric, laced jersey, suede and fringe.
Modern view of hippy style
Stepping from the style of sub-culture immediately into the
public with the help of catwalk models and famous fashionmongers, the hippie
style never transformed and changed to itself. Instead, it extended the borders
of scope and those who cannot and do not believe to be true hippy can borrow
something to adopt.
Hippy chic which is so trendy nowadays is nothing but the best
adoption of hippy style to the glamourous life which is far away from nature
and the idea of peace forever. The hippy style which is popularly advocated
through fashion magazines and at catwalks is more delicate and more rigorous
though it is not polished to the end since it still keeps the freedom typical
to hippy style.
On the whole, all hippy elements can be borrowed to
complement the image though not carelessly. Tunics, long skirts and bell
bottoms should be the basic elements in the ensemble to play with other
accessories. We can ignore the Pocahontas headbands to replace with stylish bands,
beads can be also forgotten since today we are free to wear bracelets made from
metal, wood and stones, whether precious or ordinary ones.
The flamboyant spot in the image is the kerchief which is
used to wear around the neck or waistline, at the wrist or elbow, it depends on
the fantasy and preferences. Hair is preferred freely falling, or get the locks
slightly curled, tousled naturally, picked up with a hair clip or decorate the
head with some plaits.
Stylish rules
As we know, there were no rules for hippies of the 60s,
though the present interpretation of their image is acknowledged by the society
and thus requires respect of traditions when introducing the style to the wide
public. And it is of no matter to match what is not to be matched.
Jeans, trousers or a skirt can be considered as the base of
the ensemble to decorate with the desired attributes of hippy style.
Nevertheless, it is no good when the free hippy style is
mixed with the rigorous elegance of the business style preferring strict lines
and clear colors.
Romantic, casual or country styles are the best to blend
with the hippy style when choosing the details of your ensemble.
