A mink fur coat
has been the symbol of lavish luxury for ever times among women in every
society. The fur so subtle by touch looks majestic with every ensemble and
dresses or jackets trimmed with mink fur look special. This animal beauty on
humans is strictly fought against by the PETA organization. The strong confrontation
is noticed for many recent years, with the front row of activist in the close
interlace who protect animals and designers who still launch fashion items made
from mink fur or any other fur and as the third party, there are people who side
with this or that camp. And the mink fur has its special place in this war.
The PETA (People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) initiated the war against wearing fur in
1980. They marched with banners with dramatic and loud slogans to appeal to
attention of the society. The PETA attract celebrities with the similar
perception to PETA policy. Yet, the ordinary people get affected with such
positive movement for some time. Nevertheless, PETA contributed to this
movement and there are a lot of people who do not consider a mink fur coat as
the must-have symbol of luxury life.
Somehow in
1993 the PETA achieved some goals when the Brook Brothers Company discontinued
production of winter headphones made from mink fur. The same year the Early
Winters Company discontinued production of fur items, following the fashion
colleague, most likely.
The ex-spouses
Kim Bassigner and Alek Bolduin addressed to the Government of America in 1995 backed
by the social support with the request to take measures regards to the ink fur
export to other countries. In 2006 Mariah Carey, a famous singer, took her
two luxury fir coats to PETA pretentiously presented to her by her admirers.
Since then
and up to this day the organisation commits to attract celebrities to
participate in activities with the piercing appealing mottos. In 1991 the
posters first appeared with the most famous words of protest, which tell «I’d
Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur». In 2008 the program was initiated based on the
words rhyming each others. The words addressed to the consumer to leave an
animal with its fur and decorate themselves with something else, and the slogan
sounded as «Ink, not mink».
However,
not all celebrities are so conscious. Most of them cannot resist the temptation
to appear on the red carpet wearing a short-haired furry vest, tippet or a
coat.
Show-biz
sphere still know celebrities who have never concealed their love and strive
for the fur, including Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, Rihanna, Lindsey Lohan,
Olsen sisters and many others. Elizabeth Hurley and Naomi Campbell come as the real
stimulus for the PETA. Elizabeth Hurley was featured in the ad campaign on
Blackglama production of black mink fur coats, while the situation with Naomi
was too ambiguous. Naomi Campbell who participated in PETA activities for over
fifteen years advertise today the most expensive fur items.
Such
celebrities who confront to such a solid organisation are regularly made
fun of
making parody for them and annually the list of the worst styled stars
and
celebrities is published. And the first ranks go to those who still love
fur items. So, the first place in 2010 goes to Catherine Zeta-Jones.
She has been noticed by sharp-sighted PETA representatives for her black
mink
fur coat which is called «old-womanish and tasteless».
The love for
fur items is from time to times fed by the fashion designers who regularly
launch new fur clothes and accessories to become trends. The Derek Lam show for
the season Fall-Winter 2010-2011 presents fur tippets, whereas Jean-Paul
Gaultier preferred coats trimmed with fur. The couturiers of today cannot help playing
with the fur and cannot neglect its high lavish status, whatever the PETA says.
However,
several fashion designers have decided to stop using fur in their collections
as Stella McCartney who supports PETA programs for many years. On the whole the
fashion industry launched fur items as must-have things from season to season
and most people cannot resist from acquiring them. Confrontation goes on while
the tendency is a little bit constrained.
Fur is
preferred for ever times while PETA members pour mink fur items with the red
paint to remind of the source of this fur appearance.
