Fashion is often
named as one aspect of conceptual art due to matching of various elements when
the unique and individual image is created with the help of clothes,
accessories, color palette and other details. The link between the fashion and
other spheres of art is traditional for many centuries. That is why the reputed
fashion designers introduced the basic rules adopted for wear collections in
modern style.
The French couturier
Paul Poiret, one of the influential trendsetters of the early twentieth century
caused the modern style popular in France called art nouveau in
clothes. Being in high society of France, Paul Poiret collaborated
with many famous artists of the epoch collecting their works and getting inspired
in modern creative works to build his own collections.
Throughout the
first half of the XX century fashion repeated itself and interpreted the
crucial tendencies set by modern style in art. The esthetics of the modernism was
first introduced by designers in S-shaped silhouette with ever-lasting girdle
which told on the modernistic interpretation of the female shapes of the
century. This silhouette was soon replaced by the first simplified silhouettes of
the female wear shortly before the World War I when fashion designers inspired
by the modern style refused creating girdles in favor of general simplicity and
somewhat practical cut. During the 30s straight lines were first introduced in
dresses that smoothly fitted the shapes.
The modern style
was personified in smallest design in the unusual tailoring and the fabric with
stylish trimming and accessories. When creating fresh patterns in the early
twentieth century, the designers followed the natural motifs of modern style.
The exclusive cylindrical style of dresses and round hats add to the woman body
the image of the geometrical figure or set of them which replicated the
geometry of modernist painters.
Modern style in fashion today
Being the cyclical
phenomenon, fashion repeats itself with a particular interval and there is nothing
surprising that most reputed designers regularly get inspired in modern style
rules praising the modernist esthetics in their collection. The traditions of
modern style were followed by the most legendary designers as Christian Lacroix
and Miuccia Prada, Lee Alexander McQueen, Angela Missoni and Anna Sui. Alexander
McQueen, the designer from Britain,
who ceased his life so tragically, was one of true adherents to the modern
style and thanks to his extravagant works he was named the enfant terrible of
the British fashion. Several seasons to his liking for the «digital» prints
resembling exotic patterns of reptiles, Alexander McQueen launched the
collection that was completely created on prints in art nouveau style. McQueen offered
romantic chiffon blouses decorated with patterns replicating the elements of
modernist esthetics.
One of the
major peculiarities of modern style in art is rejection of straight and direct
lines and angles in favor of curved and smoothed lines. The source of inspiration
for artists who follow the modern traditions was the ornaments from the plant
kingdom. Yet, this key peculiarity of he modernist esthetics is today seen in works
of fashion designers as well as modernist-painters who followed the conception
of natural lines and curves.
On the whole,
the plant motifs transformed by modernists of the XX century are still
favorable for collections of fashion wear in modern style.
The
American designer Anna Sui presented the new Autumn-Winter Collection 2010-2011
several weeks ago at New York Fashion Week that was also built on modern style,
namely the modernist interpretation of classic ornaments. Fine motley twists of
plant motifs of classic blouses and tiny cute dresses created by Anna Sui add
some special intensity and diversity of colors due to blending of vivid shades
against the contrasting black color.
