When looking at the
hottest spring 2010 fashion trends, two main tendencies spring to the eye -
clothing is becoming more formal, while shoes and accessories flourish to
luxury. However, let's dwell on each spring wardrobe staple separately. Spring 2010 is all
about mixing the outrageous with the elegant. There is a nod to trends of the
past, but this spring, fashion is taking a big step in a new direction. It's
about smart and sexy looks paired with sporty and delicate styles.
Neutral tones create
that elegant, barely there look. Champagne, beige and all shades of grey are
in. Part of the reason why this neutral color style has emerged is because
there is so much print and energy in other trends this season, which suggests
that neutrals will also outlive these other trends.
Everything from
boyfriend sweaters to fitted pants is coming in bold geometric patterns and
animal prints. This trend both complements and contrasts the neutral tone
style. Stripes are still in, but not in their usual form. Expect stripes to
take on a new almost optical illusion feel. Heavy print leggings are going to
be especially hot for spring. Coats, blazers and vests are still in, but now
they're worn with shorts and leggings. Big shoulders are coming back as well,
meaning that the 80s are now officially vintage (see Isabel Marant, Donna Karan,
Versace, and Carlos Miele). When it comes to dresses, wear-everywhere pull on
styles in classic colors like white and navy will keep you going throughout the
season (see Akris black dress, Bottega Veneta sheath dress and Max Mara wrap
dress). Asymmetric styles are also popular so don't hesitate to buy a
one-shoulder dress (see Jasmine Di Milo, Phillip Lim, and Versace). Keep
outfits plain and simple and go with bold, colorful accessories - large
necklaces, look-at-me cuffs and decadent cocktail rings.
Fashion trends for
spring 2010 feature some of the hottest skirts in several different styles that
combine tight tailoring, fun and airy details and playful prints. Each of these
classic skirt styles has a fresh twist that makes them suitable for the office
and with a few changes in your outfit, the skirts become an easy to wear casual
outfit.
Miniskirts made a big
come back for the fall and winter, and they are not going anywhere yet. Instead
of loose, tiered or ruffled miniskirts, spring 2010 calls for very structured
miniskirts with high waists and everything from front pockets and buttons to
thick ties at the waist and structured tailoring. The great thing about
structured miniskirts is with the right tailoring the skirts work for so many
body styles. If you have a slim frame, the high waisted look with a thick tie
gives you more of a flattering waist, petite types benefit from the instant
elongation of the mini and curvy types with tucks and gathered tailoring
accentuates what you have but keeps everything flattering.
Look for styles that
are utilitarian in color and style, khaki and black satin are the hottest for
spring 2010. This style pairs well with loose blouses that you can tuck into
your skirt and even pair with a jacket or vest. Also, open toed heels or
platform wedges in bright colors really keep the long legged look going.
Last year, stiff and
full, puffy skirts were all the rage, but this year it is tight bandage skirts
that are the latest fashion trend. The fitted look is a hot spring trend that
works well with perpetually crisp looks, including black and white styles. For
this year, look for bandage skirts that are in tiered bands, ribbon bands or
solid color blocks. This style pairs well with fitted tops, thick belts and
cutout platform pumps.
Every spring, floral
prints are a huge hit and this year is no different. Instead of huge, orderly
blooms though, busy floral prints of clustered or random florals are the
fashion trend. Spring fashion runways saw skirts of every style in dark, light
and bright colored floral skirts which translate easily into everyday wear.
T-Shirts, blouses and
tunics just had a makeover. Now they're short in the front and long in the
back. This style is called the fishtail shirt. The back can be as short as a
few inches longer than the front or as far down as the knees. As with anything
extreme style, dress the t-shirt of tunic with something simple, like a pencil
skirt, so that this fantastic trend can take the show.
Although the days of
torn jeans and patches don't seem too long ago, they're already back! They hint
towards a fierce, strong character similar to the military jackets that have
been in the spotlight these last few seasons. A great thing about this trend is
that fashionistas can manifest this trend with what they already have in their
closet.
Another hit for the
spring season is colored tights, which sometimes are painfully bright, but funny
and make quite a fashion statement (see Alexander McQueen, Marni, Marc Jacobs, Chanel,
and Louis Vuitton).
For the last 10 years,
skinny pants have dominated legwear. This trend ultimately led to the legging
revolution of the last five years. This spring, there are much looser pants,
suggesting a possible end to the skinny jean decade (Limi Feu Balenciaga, Ralph
Lauren). In spring 2010, lace-up shorts, v-neck sweaters and fashion-conscious
sweatpants make an effortlessly sexy and competitive look.
Footwear fashion for spring
2010 advocates maximum height, both wedges and ultrahigh heels of surprisingly
bizarre shapes and designs (see Versace spring collection for fancy footwear that
look more like accessories, not shoes).
Speaking of
accessories: this spring, belts are elegantly simple and understated, bracelets
are wide and chunky, preferably gold and decorated with large stones or delicate
metalwork. The same goes for rings: they are big and chunky.
Whether its high-end
designer or main-street chic, just a few well chosen investments in some of the
season's hottest styles will keep your look up-to-the-minute and fashion-ready
for spring.
