Liechtenstein
is located in the Upper Rhine valley of the European Alps. It is the fourth in
the list of smallest countries of Europe and second of the two doubly

Castles of
Liechtenstein
Local
rulers built castles to defend against invaders and often against their own
peasants who would rise up against tyrannical and corrupt rulers. Nowadays most
castles are destroyed. Two of them, Castle Vaduz and Gutenberg Castle, still
stand today. The ruins of two others can still be seen at Schellenberg and
Schaan.
The Castle
of Liechtenstein in Vaduz is situated on hill in the village of Vaduz, the
capital of Liechtenstein. It was primarily intended to serve as a fortress and
protect Liechtenstein from enemies. Vaduz Castle today is the official
residence of the ruling Prince and his family upon the restoration works. It is
not open for public but you may climb the hill and get a good look at its
outside and a beautiful view of the village and valley below.
The other
distinguished Castle Vaduz is the Guttenberg Castle, magical and mysterious built
in the 13th century. Gutenberg has played a central role in local cultural
history ever since the Bronze Age, it helped to confront attacks of invaders.
You are welcome to take a walk around the castle along the small paths. Also it
is not open to public save the official events and social measures like «Kultur-Treff
Burg Gutenberg».
